The Family 2nd March 2010

As I think about my Pop Pop Herbie and recall all of my many memories with him, more memories come to mind then I will put into words today. However, when I think of my Pop Pop there are definitely distinct characteristics and sayings that will always remind me of him. And of course, when I think of my Pop Pop, I will always think of my Nana and the unforgettable times I was lucky enough to spend with her as well. I was fortunate to grow up just 20 minutes from Ashbourne Rd., and as a result I was very close with my Nana and Pop Pop. Actually, to say I was very close with them is probably an understatement, as I consider them to be integral in shaping who I am today. I loved my Pop Pop's great sense of humor, and his laugh (which was more of a unique chuckle), which I will never forget. Whether it was while we were joking at the dinner table at Ashbourne Rd, dining out at the Blue Bell Inn, or even most recently down in Hobe Sound Florida at my parents house, Pop Pop's unique sense of humor always came out. In addition to his distinct laugh, Pop Pop also had one of a kind sayings that I'm not quite sure where they all came from. While growing up and spending time on Ashbourne Rd, I will never forget Pop Pop's line "a kick in the pants." I don't really recall the context, nor do I remember why I would ever deserve "a kick in the pants," but what I will never forget is the way he would say it to me and my brother. At times I remember even asking him to say the famous line, because I loved the way he said it. The way Pop Pop said it was always the same: he always had a huge smile on his face and when he spoke the famous words "a kick in the pants," they were always immediately followed by a roar of laughter by Mike and I and then my mom, dad, and of course Pop Pop was laughing the entire time. I know that he loved when everyone laughed at that saying, and I can recall repeating the line after him and he then would repeat it after me, all the while neither one of us could say it with a straight face and both of us struggled to hold back the inevitable smile and laughter that always followed. Most recently, while Pop Pop was living with my parents in Hobe Sound he acquired a new favorite quote which he picked up from the Deer Hunter (one of his favorite movies). Over the past couple months, even as he struggled to walk around my parent's house, Pop Pop would occasionally chant his new favorite two words (in a way that only he could do it) from the movie. What was amazing was how when he said those two words he had the same smile on his face, and the same laughter ensued just as when he said "a kick in the pants" so many years before. And speaking of movies like the Deer Hunter, Pop Pop loved his movies. Whenever he found a movie he liked, he could watch it hundreds of times and never get tired of watching it. The ability to sit and watch a movie that many times must have had a secret trick which enabled him to stay seated for that many hours. And I think I may know what one of Pop Pop's tricks was... his chair. I will never forget him sitting in his chair (and the chair was always constructed more like a bird's nest with pillows crunched up and tucked in corners, then covered in layers and layers of knitted blankets, usually covered in another pillow, but always topped off the same way, with Pop Pop lying across the chair with a licorice or dark chocolate milky way in his hand). There are obviously many more memories that I can recall, like the vacations to Longboat Key and the fresh cinnamon twist donuts that Pop Pop and I loved so much, or the many rounds of golf that the two of us shared together, but I will save those and the many others for another time. I will always love my Nana and Pop Pop and although I dearly miss them, I am comforted to know that they are both back together again...
